DESCRIPTION:Learning Week I: Opportunity Recognition\n\n\n“Opportunity Recognition” is organised to engage the doctoral candidates in the early stage of developing a feasible business\, product or service idea connected to the CAD industry. \nLocation\nThe meeting will take place at the Inria research center at Sophia Antipolis. Lunches and breaks will be served on site. \n\nProgramme of the event:\nThe event will start on Monday afternoon and will close on Friday at noon. \nMonday April 3 : How to turn scientific innovative knowledge into products ?\n13:00-14:00: Lunch at Inria\n14:00-15:00 : Oliver Labs – MOLabs. \n\nTitle : The path towards the math sculptures business MO-Labs\nAbstract : The talk will give an overview about how I started from being\na researcher in algebraic geometry\, and how I finally came to run my own\nbusiness MO-Labs which creates mathematical sculptures and other\nmath objects. Figures which will play a role in this story include “a badly\nprepared crêpe”\, “a cup of coffee in the sun”\, and “a house next to the vineyards”.\n\n15:00-16:00 : Andreas Fabri – GeometryFactory. \n\nTitle : CGAL – The Computational Geometry Algorithms Library\nAbstract : I will present the co-evolution of the CGAL Open Source\nproject and GeometryFactory\, the software development\ncompany that emanated from this project in 2003.\nWe start with the technical challenges encountered when\ndeveloping geometric data structures and algorithms\,\nand examples for how they are used in different application domains.\nWe then explain our strategy to turn research prototypes into products\nand make them perennial\, the various forms of interaction between\nGeometryFactory and its academic partners\, and the choice\nof an open source license that corresponds best to our business model.\n\n16:00-16:30 : Coffee Break\n16:30-17:30 :  Alexander Schiftner – Evolute & ShapeDiver \n\nTitle : Evolute – how mathematicians and geometers can make a difference in architecture\nAbstract : I will present the story of Evolute\, which was founded in 2008 as a spin-off\nfrom the research group for Geometric Modeling and Industrial Geometry at TU Vienna.\nAt Evolute we are applying methods of geometric optimization\, geometric data analysis\nand fitting to problems arising in architecture. While we started with a clear focus on\nfreeform facades\, we found that related problems also exist in “flat” architecture.
