Learning Week I: Opportunity Recognition
“Opportunity Recognition” is organised to engage the doctoral candidates in the early stage of developing a feasible business, product or service idea connected to the CAD industry.
The meeting will take place at the Inria research center at Sophia Antipolis. Lunches and breaks will be served on site.
Programme of the event:
The event will start on Monday afternoon and will close on Friday at noon.
Monday April 3 : How to turn scientific innovative knowledge into products ?
13:00-14:00: Lunch at Inria
14:00-15:00 : Oliver Labs – MOLabs.
- Title : The path towards the math sculptures business MO-Labs
- Abstract : The talk will give an overview about how I started from being
a researcher in algebraic geometry, and how I finally came to run my own
business MO-Labs which creates mathematical sculptures and other
math objects. Figures which will play a role in this story include “a badly
prepared crêpe”, “a cup of coffee in the sun”, and “a house next to the vineyards”.
15:00-16:00 : Andreas Fabri – GeometryFactory.
- Title : CGAL – The Computational Geometry Algorithms Library
- Abstract : I will present the co-evolution of the CGAL Open Source
project and GeometryFactory, the software development
company that emanated from this project in 2003.
We start with the technical challenges encountered when
developing geometric data structures and algorithms,
and examples for how they are used in different application domains.
We then explain our strategy to turn research prototypes into products
and make them perennial, the various forms of interaction between
GeometryFactory and its academic partners, and the choice
of an open source license that corresponds best to our business model.
- Title : Evolute – how mathematicians and geometers can make a difference in architecture
- Abstract : I will present the story of Evolute, which was founded in 2008 as a spin-off
from the research group for Geometric Modeling and Industrial Geometry at TU Vienna.
At Evolute we are applying methods of geometric optimization, geometric data analysis
and fitting to problems arising in architecture. While we started with a clear focus on
freeform facades, we found that related problems also exist in “flat” architecture. I will
also talk briefly about ShapeDiver, a startup which we founded out of Evolute and are
19:30 : social event in the restaurant “Albert 1er” in Antibes.
Tuesday to Thursday, April 4-6 :
Three days of training on “Opportunity recognition in intensive technology program“.
This training will mix theorical presentation as well as a practical work to apply concepts
Detailed program : TrainingProgram2017.
Wednesday 17:00-18:00 : Discussion on Arcades activities and secondments.
Thursday 17:00-17:30 : Training recap.
